Hafa Adai,
As a chemistry professional, I am pleased to share with you the launching of the Chemical Society of Guam in June 2021. A group of chemistry professionals in Guam whose names are listed below have held several meetings in the Spring of 2021 to form the Chemical Society that would serve Guam and the Northern Marianas. This vision was born from the desire to deepen the engagement of professional chemists: educators, professionals, and researchers with our community and schools and strengthen our professional network. The University of Guam through the chemistry program have launched some outreach programs such as Chemistry Titration Competition for high school that has successfully become an annual event. This and other similar endeavors, are what we plan to grow for our outreach activities. In the same way, the Society also aims to conduct trainings, workshops, symposiums, and outreach that will improve the public good in matters relating chemical knowledge, management and safety. In all these, we would like to bring together our professional expertise to share with the community and also strengthen the network of professional chemists. The Society will also serve as a body to protect the standard of practice of chemistry in our professional endeavors.
The Society will strive to recruit members from all chemistry related fields, viz., teachers, college professors, researchers, government/industrial scientists, technicians, consultants, and graduates whose core mission is in propagation and or practice of chemistry.
The goals for the Society mirror some well-established societies such as The American Chemical Society (USA) and The Chemical Society of the South Pacific (Fiji). However, the main focus will be on Guam and the Northern Marianas region. The Guam Chemical Society will also seek to partner with potential sponsors in the region to help achieve its mission.
The pioneering committee that brought this vision to reality are: Dr. Maika Vuki, Dr. Tedros Bezabeh, Dr. John Limtiaco (University of Guam); Dr. Anthony Sunga (Guam Community College); Ms. Monica Salas (Guam Forensic Laboratory); Dr. Sanjay Sharma (JFK High School), Ms. Ashley McNally (Harvest Christian Academy)
The membership fee for the Society is $50.00 per year. Undergraduate students are also eligible, and the annual subscription fee is $25.00. The application form is available online
I hope you will consider joining the Chemical Society of Guam! For more, please contact Dr. Maika Vuki (vukim@triton.uog.edu).
Respectfully,
Maika Vuki, PhD
